Musings on Independence - French American Friendship

Happy 4th of July!!!!

Yes, tomorrow is USAmerican Independence Day, and to celebrate it I shall wear my Hermes scarf 'Liberty'.  To quote from a posting on 1st Dibs,

"This rare and important silk scarf was made as a limited edition by Hermes, commemorating the 4th July Independence Day and the Statue of Liberty Centennial in 1986. The design was created by Joachim Metz in 1984, ahead of the Centennial celebrations."

Joachim Metz is one of my favourite scarf designers, I am especially fond of his Gloria Soli/Carpe Diem design.  Seize the Day - and Throttle it! as I always say.

It is often forgotten in both the USA and France that France was an early friend and supporter of the young American republic, and that the Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French to the American people in 1886, to commemorate the nation's independence day.  The statue is made of copper, and the green outside is verdigris.  It was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, and built by Gustave Eiffel, who also created the tower that bears his name and is a main symbol of Paris.
